Slaughterville welcomes "Extreme Makeover Home Edition"

The towns of Slaughterville and Lexington won’t go to war over it but there are bragging rights on the line. Both towns want to claim the Extreme Makeover Home Edition was built in their own city limits.

The couple originally lived in Lexington, on SH 39 at 120th Avenue SE. The house was built on land they owned farther north on 120th  near York Road.

The mayor of Slaughterville, Bobby Cleveland, says the home was built in his town. But some residents still claim it’s in Lexington. It’s in the Lexington school district and folks out there have Lexington mailing addresses since Slaughterville doesn’t have a post office — yet.

We datelined the first story from Lexington because that’s where the first staging took place. But Monday’s story had a Slaughterville dateline.

Incidentally, not everyone is happy about the “extreme home makeover.” Laura Dossett, who lives on 180th Avenue SE, has cows on 120th Avenue SE. She called and said she was blocked from her normal route to feed them last week and had to go eight miles around to get to them each day.

She is also concerned that the new home will cause property values and ad valorem taxes to increase in the area.

Another caller who did not leave a name said he was concerned that six sheriff’s cruisers were being used for security and to set up roadblocks. They also wanted to know if county work crews were hauling material to the home site.
