Andy, you are correct in your assessment of this crazy law. And yes once again Oklahoma makes the national news only to show our backwards ways. The previous poster has the right to their opinion but this kind of backwards thinking is why even with our low cost of living and national recognition we cannot get new LARGE companies to even think of locating here. Guns, anti-choice legislation and other meddling in the lives of Oklahoma citizens seems contrary to what "less gov't" should be about. Faced with other huge problems our elected officials spend their time with this sort of nonsense. I've lived here all my life and don't plan on leaving now but I am embarrassed for our state.

The Wild West all over again? Hardly. It would really be refreshing, especially for someone in a position such as yours, to see that you wrote something based on facts and statistics. But, that would defy the Liberal rule of law; if ya can't state facts just scare 'em with misinformation.

"Oklahoma has already let the world know we’re anti-immigrant and anti-woman. Now, we’re going to send the signal to tourists, potential employers and others that frontier justice is alive and well here."
This is total BS.

"When some of the same lawmakers were pushing the bill allowing permit owners and ex-military folks to carry concealed weapons in the classroom, the argument was that a deranged student wouldn’t start shooting because someone in the classroom may be armed. Now, the argument is the shooter will know immediately if someone is armed and won’t act. Which is it?"
I'll take BOTH ARE CORRECT for a thousand Alex.

And comparing open carry to open containers? That one is just too ignorant to respond to.

BTW, if your kids cry at the sight of a gun it doesn't say a thing about gun ownership. It speaks volumes about bad parenting. Might wanna toughen those little buggers up some.

There IS a certain amount of excitement everywhere about the OU women's basketball team. I can feel it all around me when the subject is brought up anywhere in Norman.

You hit it on the head. My dad used to have TV repair service about a half mile from the McNatt place for a short while in the mid-80's. I used to remember a local weekly where Big John and Squaw had an article. Slaughterville was a wonderful place back then. Ober Shobert, the Vaughns and the Bryants were all local dignitaries in the area. I haven't thought much of the area for awhile, until a tear welled up in my eye's when I read of Squaw's passing. Although I am greatly saddened at the loss and of one more piece of Americana gone, I am happy for the memories I do have of that time. With a hat over my heart, thanks Big John and Squaw.

If you want students to attend, then push the empty donor seats further up the rows and allow students to be closer to the court. Sell "day of game" tickets and SRO tickets on the cheap. Put more courtside seating in. Also, considering that many students are struggling to even get to and pay for college, lowering student season ticket prices wouldn't hurt a bit, either. Ditto for non-students, too. Right now, the LNC is an arena that houses a basketball team. It needs to become a basketball court surrounded by an arena. Fans don't want to see fat guys dancing at halftime. They want to see wins on the scoreboard. When a trip to the LNC is about the game and not the experience, that's when the fans will come in droves. Until then, we're a football school that plays basketball too, which, as a basketball fan first, drives me insane.

Andy..I think it all started to go downhill with sending Little Red to the happy hunting ground, and with the demise of the Gingersnaps at Norman High School. Of course, changing the avatar of the Whittier Warriors didn't help. Mike

Andy,

In the unlikely event OU will allow a casting contest at the Duck Pond, I will begin agitating for the annual Duck Pond Fishing Derby to be reestablished.

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything when I remind that the ban on such things arises from the nasty habit of monofilament line to ensnare ducks and geese. Hooks are also frowned on by some.

Like you, I grew up with family fishing. Mussel Shoals, Hospital Lakes, Little River, etc. Grandma and Grandpa McDanel with cane poles, a cork, a hook, and a worm. Maybe bacon, liver, shrimp, grasshopper or piece of soap. And tons of patience. Dad flailing around the shoreline with a bait casting rod and reel, and the plug de jure. Mom reading a book in the shade. Me watching the old folks catch all the fish, but, lacking their patience, flailing along behind Dad with my version of the plug de jure. Then, later, enjoying the fish fry, with the elders' fish.

Years later, wealth overwhelmed us, and, with metal boat and 1 1/2 horsepower electric motor, Dad discovered jug and trot-line fishing. He finally was supplying the fish for supper.

My three boys grew up with spinning gear, few backlashes, and enough success that we've enjoyed lots of fishing trips. The best, for my buck, have been to Slippery Falls Scout Ranch during the Spring and Fall. Family camping and fishing at its best. Keeping only what we can eat and throwing the rest back to grow a bit.

Perhaps in memory of those Duck Pond Derbies, I instigated two or three Sooner District Scout Fishing Derbies in the early 80's. While they were fairly well attended, they have not, to my knowledge, been repeated. Maybe somebody needs to give that a try again.

In the meantime, if you get that Duck Pond casting deal going let me know. Personally, I think you need to look at doing it at the little lake up by Eisenhower where the trout fishing exercise had seen some success.

I agree with everything you wrote except one thing. It is not a cyclical thing.
Newspaper readership will continue to decline, and more and more newspapers will close. The world has changed, and people have changed with it. READING the news is no longer important to most people -- especially young people.

Best wishes for the Transcript and all newspapers, but the outlook is bleak.
