Parenting 101

Posted on August 31, 2009.

Parenting is hard work. And no matter how much practice you may have had with it, it’s a challenge.
It’s also the best challenge those of us who are in the midst of it have ever taken on. It’s rewarding in ways we never could have imagined, even if sometimes it is equally as frustrating.
In this space we’ll share stories, successes, miseries and probably even add a few entries while we’re up in the middle of the night with a sick baby. Hopefully we can help each other along to help our next generation along.
Some of you know my story. Many don’t. I have three children, ages 13, 13 and 4, from three former relationships, who I have at various times. I have to count at the start of the day to make sure I finish the day with the same number. I re-married about three months ago to a lovely lady with a 3-year-old of her own. We’re not quite the Brady Bunch, but we’re close.
Needless to say, I can use all the help I can get.
Like the time two years ago about this time when I wondered if my little daughter was ever going to figure out potty training, even writing a column wondering whether she’d still be in a pullup on prom night.
Readers gave me some good suggestions, and I’m happy to report the pullups are long gone.
Prom night is still lurking down the road.
Ugh.
I’ll deal with that later.
