Strike up the band

Posted on October 6, 2009.

My love of football has caused me to be one of those guys who at times doesn’t pay much attention to the band. Sure, they add a lot to the scene and a band that really knows what they are doing when they’re marching will still get my attention.
My kids are doing their best to change that. Both have found their way into the band and, by all accounts, are doing a pretty darn good job.
My daughter is in her second year playing the trombone. She’s happy that the trombone section was cut back in numbers this year, with a few guys playing that until they could get into the percussion instruments now happily moved over. And she is pretty much awesome.
My son is in his third year on saxophone but his first playing tenor sax. As the only tenor sax in the band, he reports it’s easy to maintain his spot as first chair. He is just as awesome.
And, I do point out to them that I was sort of a cross-section of social groups at their age. I was a violinist in the orchestra, part of the science club but also starting power forward on the basketball team one season.
So maybe this music stuff isn’t as foreign to me as I thought.
