1:30 ice update

Posted on January 28, 2010.

The forecasted power outages for the area are not here yet, but it seems only a matter of time.
Ice continues to accumulate on trees and power lines and it’s becoming increasingly noticeable. The trees around Moore look significantly more coated in the last hour since the freezing rain has gotten stronger.
Here are some numbers from our friends south and west of Cleveland County. Cotton Electric Co-Op, which serves many of the smaller towns within 20 or 30 miles or so in all directions of Lawton, is reporting as of 1:25 p.m. 3,005 outages out of a little more than 21,000 customers. The weather they have been experiencing the last couple of hours continues to move this way.
As of a little before 1:30, there still were no areas of more than 50 outages on the OG&E map.
Roads are getting worse minute by minute as well. Most of western Oklahoma now is in the “slick in spots” or “slick and hazardous” category. For now, Cleveland County still is just tabbed as having “slick bridges and overpasses” but I can tell you from a near fall outside the pavement is getting slick in places.
Freezing rain is projected through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening before it finally turns over into snow.
In other words, get those blankets, generators and ice skates ready in the next couple of hours.
