What’s the big deal with The Beatles?

Last week on the Billboard Pop Top 100 Catalog Albums sales, the Beatles occupied nine of the top 10 slots. Until I saw that, I didn’t even know The Beatles had put out that may albums.
Yet, I still do not see what the big deal is. They put out a couple of good songs that and a few bad movies. Talent wise they do not compare to Run-DMC, Guns & Roses or The Roots. But fans act like they invented music.
It’s a puzzle I hope someone can explain to me. Why have the Beatles music lasted this long? Because truthfully, it’s a toss up between them and The Back Street Boys on who is better.

This is kind of like saying Bob Stoops is a better coach than Bud Wilkinson. Fortuantely history allows greatness to exist both within and beyond our narrow lifetimes, and its all good.

I’ve heard people say the same thing about Hank Williams, James Brown and Beethoven. To think that the Beatles had no real talent means you must believe that (A) the MILLIONS of people who rave about them are gullible suckers who will believe and buy anything they are told, or (B) you just don’t like them.

There was a time when I couldn’t understand why any rational person would see any value in the artists I mentioned above. I’m glad I finally saw the light, because I now know how much great music I was missing because of my own inability to “hear” what I was listening to.

A great musician once said “What we hear is the quality of our listening”. I hope you eventually come to see why their music is widely celebrated more than 40 years later. I won’t be able to find out if I’m right, but I predict they will still be popular 200 years from now. Like Beethoven.

PS: Actually I think it’s (C) you’re just trying to provoke a response. It worked!

While I never mind provoking a response, I truly do find a hard time seeing why the Beatles are a BIG deal. My mother loves them. She said they changed music. We argued for an hour about that one day. So, it could be generational, but I don’t think so.

It’s definitely not generational. For many years now I’ve heard friends say their kids are Beatle fans, even if their parents were not.

My college-age nephew has always had a keen interest in music. Most of his favorite bands are new ones I’ve never heard of, but he’s always liked ’60s pop. For the past year he’s been particularly interested in the Beatles and now he’s trying to collect copies of their original LPs.

Definately (C)(per Yipp_eee) too ridiculous to argue about.
