Sooners in the NFL

While everyone is well aware of the NFL careers for former Sooners like All-Pro Adrian Peterson, a number of other recent Sooner stars spent the last few days of training camp sweating out their fates to make NFL rosters.
Here are some familiar names and what they’re up to.
* Defensive back Marcus Walker was released by the Minnesota Vikings but then was signed to the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers. Duke Robinson, part of the 2009 rookie class from OU, is listed as the backup right guard for the Panthers.
* Nic Harris, who played defensive back at OU, has made the Buffalo Bills and is listed as a linebacker. Harris was a fifth round pick in the 2009 draft.
* Dusty Dvoracek’s injury-riddled career saw him tear another ACL. He subsequently was released by the Chicago Bears. The Bears also have rookie receiver Juaquin Iglesias on their active roster.
* Linebacker Rufus Alexander was picked up during camp by the Detroit Lions but was in their last round of cuts.
* J.D Runnels was an early cut from the Cincinnati Bengals.
* There wasn’t a lot of doubt Phil Loadholt would make the Vikings after being a second-round pick. But he’s earned the opening day start at right tackle.
* Rookie receiver Manny Johnson is on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.
* Two players with OU ties are on the New York Giants’ practice squad, running back Allen Patrick and former Sooner QB Rhett Bomar.
* Tight end Joe Jon Finley is also on a practice squad, with the San Francisco 49ers.
* Larry Birdine wasn’t so lucky. The defensive end was among the last cuts by the Tennessee Titans.
* Defensive back Eric Bassey is with the St. Louis Rams but begins the season on injured reserve with a knee problem.

Sooner football, the mustache lives

So if you somehow didn’t notice by now, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford got hurt in Saturday’s loss to Brigham Young.
And if you didn’t know that, you probably aren’t reading this anyway.
The terrible news for fans around here is the Sooners already have a loss to open their season.
The good news, big picture-wise, is that backup quarterback Landry Jones may have brought back the mustache look.
If you could get past the anger and hurt of losing the game, you surely noticed the redshirt freshman’s look. It’s a circa 1970s quarterback look, old-school and sharp. Somewhere, Tom Selleck is smiling.
Maybe it’s not the best mustache on campus, not as long as Sooner baseball coach Sunny Golloway is around.
I’ll wear my own ’stache for a while in honor of young Landry. Sooner fans hope his play until Bradford is back is as sharp as his look.

“Moore” football tonight

Getting ready to go watch the Moore War here in about 90 minutes. Seems to be a similar deal to last night’s Crosstown Clash, Westmoore had quite a bit better team last year but the gap seems to maybe have closed a little bit with the Jaguars losing their longtime coach Mike Whaley to the OSSAA only about a month before practice started and Moore likely more comfortable with the system in its second year under coach Scott Myers.

Both teams send out quarterbacks making their first career varsity starts at the position. They’ll get battle-tested in a big environment in a hurry.

Regardless, this game always draws a huge crowd, if you aren’t there already as I type this at 5:52 p.m., you may already have to walk a long way from your parking space.

Crosstown Clash

Norman North is ranked but lost some really good talent. It’s hard for any team to lose three Division I players and not feel it. Norman High has a lot of guys back and figures to be better in their second year for coach Greg Nation. Does it all add up to making up a 58-0 margin from last year? I think it ought to be closer than that score, that’s for sure.

What do you think?
