TNT Movie Geeks – Hurt by the Hurt Locker?

I have to admit, I’ve been on the Avatar bandwagon since Adam and I went up to the IMAX at Quail Springs Mall on opening day to review it.

So, after Katheryn Bigelow, coincidentally, as everyone has heard by now, James Cameron’s ex, won best director, and her film, The Hurt Locker, best picture, I have to admit I was a little disappointed.

But if ever there were not just two, but four, films I could really get behind for best picture, this was the year. Not only did I love Avatar as a movie-going experience, but I thought the acting, pacing and locations in The Hurt Locker were incredible. A true delight of a war film.

Then there was the emotion and humor of Up in the Air, which had my emotions going all over the map when I was watching it. Jason Reitman’s resume is starting to fill out thanks to Up in the Air, Juno and Thank You, For Smoking.

Of course, Adam and I both loved Inglorious Basterds, now my favorite Tarantino film. Funny, beautifully shot, a fun story and some great, great acting make this a must-see from 2009.

I have three of these films sitting at home on my DVD shelf now, and I watched them last weekend to just remind myself how good they were.

So far in 2010, we’ve reviewed some pretty bad films (reminds me of the start of 2009, really), with the exception of Martin Scorcese’s latest, Shutter Island, which is a treat, especially in the theater.

So, my hope is that 2010 starts looking like 2009 sometime in May. Last year, we had Star Trek as our escapism hit. This year it’s likely Iron Man 2. I just hope August through December has the great films this year that last year had.

Though I wouldn’t hold my breath at having four horses in the best picture race worth cheering on.
